Napier Prison Backpackers and Tours

Visit the oldest prison in New Zealand which opened originally as an army barracks,then later became a lunatic asylum before finally becoming a prison in 1862. It closed in 1993. At it's busiest it held up to 82 prisoners. The huge stone wall was quarried by prisoners on 'hard labour' under quarry master Jack 'the bastard' Adams. Out of this grew the Hauhau Movement. A leader?Te Ua Haumene?claimed to have been inspired by the Angel Gabriel, and performed apparent miracles. He founded the Pai Marire religion. He urged peaceful methods, but some of his followers became fanatics and wanted to slay all Europeans and non-Hauhau Maori.Early in 1865 a group of Hauhau Maori, under the leadership of Kereopa killed Karl Volkner, the Anglican Minister at Opotiki. Sister Joseph was to meet Kereopa later as he awaited trial in the Napier Prison.
